survey
Hello
Has anyone ever did a survey to assess how people view your magazine or what they would like to read or not read!
Could anyone suggest any questions?
Thanks

We haven't done a survey recently. About 15 years ago we got about a dozen replies from a print run of 300.

A few months ago, we did a "survey" of our "readership" because I was wondering how much of my time at the computer, putting the magazine together might be wasted.
The questions we asked were:–
Do you take the magazine? Always/Sometimes/Never
Do you usually read most of the items? Yes/No/
Do you usually read mainly the local generated items?
Yes/No
Do you usually read the book reviews? Yes/No
Do you usually read the Letter from St James the Least?
Yes/No
Do you usually do the Crossword? Yes/No
Do you usually do the Sudoku? Yes/No
Do you and/or your children read the children's pages?
Yes/No/
Is there anything you would like to see included which isn't at present?
If so, please give details below, thank you.
Any further comments or suggestions:
From our small print-run of 100, we got about 30 replies.
The results were generally favourable. The two items that most people ignored were the cross-word and the sudoku puzzles. So, these have been discontinued — sorry Parish Pump.
One of the suggestions that came back was for a Gardening Tips page.
As we said in our reply – good idea, but who is going to generate it.
We had other ideas like this.
Generally, the survey went down well and the results were quite surprising.

I am just beginning my second year as Editor of our Church magazine 'Crosstalk'. For the first year I ran a monthly feature with Gardening tips. I found that Notcutts provide a downloadable article that was just what I was looking for - and only required me to acknoelwedge the source in our magazine. I am know thinking about Cooking round Britain for the next 12 months, and as well as a recipe we will be featuring a church or christian feature of that area.

When I took over as editor I asked for peoples opinions and what they liked/didn't like. That was about five years ago and didn't get one reply. I still don't get any suggestions! but people tell me how much they like the magazine, so must be doing something right. I said it before/eslewhere in this forum, you can't beat the personal touch. Ask folk face to face, we all know no one reads notices :-)

I sometimes pop into the local pub and ask people what they think of our church/neighbourhood news magazine. Occasionally people have offered to write articles - encourage them! I find that sometimes you get a response. Once I interviewed a group of locals about how they met their spouses (a Valentines article for February). Some didn't want to know, but the majority of people didn't mind me telling their stories. Always let them "proof read" your article first, though.
