Do you use Facebook and Twitter ?
One of our younger members has suggested we create a Facebook and Twitter page for our church. I am not sure how/if this will work for us. What is the role of these sites, and would they help to promote the church to a wider audience? We already have our own church website and publish our magazine on it each month.
Does anyone have a Facebook or Twitter page for their church already? If so, does it help in any way, and how? Do you need to monitor regularly and do you get much spam on them?
We are still unsure what to do about this one, so any useful comments would help greatly.

If you see my similar posting you'll see that we've set up a blog with feed into Twitter to complement our Magazine. I've only just recently set it up and it was partly because we don't have a decent website. You can turn off comments on these sites so that you don't have to manage spam. I felt it was an opportunity to potentially attract a different audience and it can be more 'of the moment' eg. one of my most successful postings was asking for palm crosses to be returned for Ash Wednesday - and it worked, someone remembered theirs as a result!

Have a look at our Facebook Page for some ideas - 'Holy Rood Church Swinton'
It's still very much work in progress however, I find it's a lot quicker and easier to use FB than updating a website. You can get timely information out to your 'friends' as well as posting photos.
Certainly in my opinion FB is very much about creating an online community - websites (for me) are more about providing 'static' information.
Also, my thinking is it's about making your church more 'accessible' and appealing to to a tech savvy generation.
BEFORE doing anything with FB you need to decide whether to set up a FB Page or Group - although very similar in appearance they are DIFFERENT and there's and up/down side to each. However, you do need to decide which one is right for your organistion (Fyi I went for the Page option).
Again, and this is all a matter of choice, I've stayed away from Twitter & Flcker purely from the logisitical side of not wanting to maintain a website, FB Page, Twitter & Flckr feeds. I have lloked at Flckr but for the moment consider FB does all I need it to do.
Anyway, please do take a look and contact us via the FB Page, wenbsite, (preferably) or this forum should you require any further information.
Kind regards
Holy Rood Swinton
